Dr Morton's Prescription© for persistent travellers' diarrhoea (Giardia)
If traveller's diarrhoea has not responded to treatment with ciprofloxacin or azithromycin you should consider another gut parasite called giardia. This organism is prevalent in area of the world with poor sanitation. You may decide to have a stool test prior to starting treatment
- Metronidazole is the treatment of choice
- The same antibiotic will treat amoebic dysentery
- Keep well hydrated and keep your body chemistry in balance
- Settle the diarrhoea with loperamide if possible
